Travel Writer of the Year (Philippine Airlines)

The Travel Writer of the Year will be selected from the winners and runners-up of the writing and open categories (where applicable).

Travel Photographer of the Year (Philippine Airlines)

The Travel Photographer of the Year will be selected from the winners and runners-up of the image and open categories (where applicable).

Best New Zealand Travel Feature (Heritage Hotels)

This award is for the best article about travelling inside New Zealand. Stories may be published in print, online or on a blog. There is no upper word limit, but stories should be of a substantial size – at least 500 words. Entries may describe travel destinations, products, activities or experiences and may range from a single destination to several destinations, products, experiences or activities that are thematically linked.

Best International Travel Feature (AA Directions)

This award is for the best article about travelling outside New Zealand. Stories may be published in print, online or on a blog. There is no upper word limit, but stories should be of a substantial size – at least 500 words. Entries may describe travel destinations, products, activities or experiences and may range from a single destination to several destinations, products, experiences or activities that are thematically linked.

Best New Zealand Image (Great Journeys of New Zealand)

The image can be from anywhere or of anyone within New Zealand. Photographs will be judged on ability to communicate a sense of the place, people, and/or culture; ability to evoke interest and engage the viewer; and the use of photographic techniques. Images can be taken with any device including camera, iPad or smartphone. The creative use of lighting, composition, focus and other photographic techniques, including apps and filters, is permitted to produce an outstanding image illustrating a travel destination or experience. It can have been published in print, online or on social media. The image must have been published for the first time during the stipulated qualifying period but might have been taken in previous years.

Best International Image (Southern Cross)

The image can be from anywhere or of anyone outside New Zealand. Photographs will be judged on ability to communicate a sense of the place, people, and/or culture; ability to evoke interest and engage the viewer; and the use of photographic techniques. Images can be taken with any device including camera, iPad or smartphone. The creative use of lighting, composition, focus and other photographic techniques, including apps and filters, is permitted to produce an outstanding image illustrating a travel destination or experience. It can have been published in print, online or on social media. The image must have been published for the first time during the stipulated qualifying period but might have been taken in previous years.

Open category: UK and Ireland (Visit Britain / Tourism Ireland)

This award is for the best photo, Instagram image, article or blog post which inspires visitors to the destinations of the United Kingdom and/or the island of Ireland. The entry must have been written, taken or posted during the stipulated qualifying period. Entries may arise from a famil or privately organised trip. Entries will be judged on their ability to communicate a sense of the place, people, and/or culture and their ability to evoke interest and engage the reader/viewer. Images can be taken with any device including camera, iPad or smartphone. The creative use of lighting, composition, focus and other photographic techniques, including apps and filters, is permitted. Articles and images entered in other categories are eligible.

Open category: Responsible Tourism (TreadRight Foundation)

This award is for the best photo, Instagram image, article or blog post which promotes the values of responsible tourism - travel that is environmentally, socially, culturally and/or economically sustainable. Entries should reflect a low-impact experience or destination, or an organisation or individual committed to sustainable travel. Judging will prioritise the entry’s ability to inspire readers to travel and live in a more responsible way. The entry must have been written, taken or posted during the stipulated qualifying period. Entries may arise from a famil or privately organised trip. Images can be taken with any device including camera, iPad or smartphone. The creative use of lighting, composition, focus and other photographic techniques, including apps and filters, is permitted. Articles and images entered in other categories are eligible.

Rising Star (NZ Herald Travel)

This category is for Rising Stars who are new to the travel writing industry. Award entrants are writers or digital influencers who have had their first travel story published in print or online during the stipulated qualifying period. Stories should be of a substantial size – at least 1000 words. Entrants must be residents of New Zealand.

Entrants must be current Travcom members. Each entry attracts a fee of NZ$10.
